After a lot of hunting, early mornings of crawling out of a warm bed to set out in the cold an freeze it finally paid off for Trace. Me and him have hunted several times, either getting blanked or only seeing bucks that were to small to shoot due to the new antler restriction. We have hunted every morning since Christmas day with temps in the 20's. We had only seen 10-12 does and no shot was given they were moving on. I give hime credit he stuck with it when I figured after a couple of mornings an evening of seeing nothing he kept on.
We eased into our stand a little late on the 30th a little late because I was dragging a little that morning. We ran two small bucks off, nothing stirred till 8:15, then to my left I seen 2 small bucks, I told Trace we have 2 to the left, both to small. I then seen another, and another and then 2 more, dang it!!!!!! so far all were to small then bringing up the rear was the 7th buck in the group, a 7pt we had several pics of but hadnt seen. I told Trace to get his gun up and ready. They were around 30 yrds from us rolling towards the foodplot. The 7 is the last one in, Trace didnt waste any time. As soon as he stopped, the deer barley had a chance to drop his head and start feeding when he dropped the hammer on his .243.
Trace jumped up I GOT HIM!!!!! I was still trying to see, sure enough he did. When he hit the buck he dropped down an took off on a dead run, his chest was barely a foot of the ground and he was reaching for all he could, Trace was going off like a siren, the buck made it to the fence and barely cleared it, when he hit the ground he never got back up!!
Thats when the high fives and yelling really took off, he smoked him!!!!!!!!!!When we got to the buck Trace showed me his bullet hole, it went into the should an traveled through to next shoulder, crushed his front end running gear. This is his second buck but I can tell ya he is more proud of this buck, he has told his story I dont know how many times and couldnt been more prouder if it was a B & C. I know im proud of him, I was really suprised he didnt get more rattled because of how long he had to wait to shoot, he did tell his heart was pounding pretty hard.
These last two, Im not sure what he was doing, I was trying to figure out camera and this is what showed up
